The Smoke Stacks

The Smokers claim several former prison blocks for their own, including the tallest spires (for the sunlit grow pods that augment scavenged spacer rations) and the deepest bowls of the former prison (prized for their relative warmth). Dark, hazy with burned rare earths, and perpetually cold, the stacks provide little more than shelter from the wind. The society within, however, also offers the freedom to live however one pleases – so long as residents remain ready to jump at Smoke’s command. Filth, hunger, and scuffles are the rule, with scenes of violence and extreme privation rarely garnering more than a quick wager on the outcome (bets are usually placed in tobacco or rations, though matches, lighters, and favors are also common currency). It is a mean existence, although for many who seek out a place like Sepulchre, it is also the pinnacle of liberty.

The deepest level of the Smoke Stacks houses the ice train, a grav transport from before the Scream, which successive generations have tried to bring back online, with varying degrees of success. When operational, it provides a large advantage, in scavenging operations, over other clans that must carry loot in single person snow mobiles, or (more commonly) on foot.
